A few weeks ago also saw the release of the latest C tangana album El madrileño, a series of works with very interesting collaborations. In this album the author works with a very unloaded sound; he hardly uses cutting or invasive rhythms, when he puts them on the table they are serious and almost atmospheric. The synthesizers are ambient and the bass is modern and smooth ryb-like.
But there is not only this work; there is also the latest Demi Lovato album Dancing with the Devil…the Art of Starting Over, or even artists who have released singles, such as Gone by ROSÉ (Blackpink), or Rosalía and Billie Eilish with their collaboration Lo vas a olvidar, and a long etcetera of examples that show us how this emptiness, this extreme and minimalist uniformity in the concept of the sound design of the songs is imposed, as in luxury houses years ago large glass windows, little furniture and everything white and empty were imposed.
¿Por qué triunfa vacío?
On the one hand, the tracks have little or no percussion, which gives the tracks moreheadroom. This is already a great thing, but also in this type of track there is room for more non-percussive sound elements, which also creates a more perfect balance (although without so much thrust, of course). The emptiness of elements generates a greater sense of overall volume, and the good balance has as a consequence the possibility of reinforcing the emotion in the listener. But does that mean that percussion is going to be lost in urban music? Not at all: the only thing we know about this new avenue for music is that it is happening now and strictly in the mainstream music scene. Moreover, there are many genres that need percussion, to the point that without it they would lose all coherence as genres with different roots (club, hiphop, edm…).
Can other genres be emptied out?
Yes, but it would take a lot of fuss. To empty these genres, we would need a major artist or generation of artists with a good connection with the young public. These artists could bring more underground genres closer to the mainstream due to the popularity of their other proposals. But of course, it would take a lot of creativity and open-mindedness on the part of these artists to get to that point.
